In May this year JOE LEE became the 2022 recipient of the Amy Su shield.
The Amy Su shield was introduced last year in memory of our dear friend and Original Bootcamp recruit, Amy, who we lost too soon. Amy’s values of determination, grit, consistency and fun are used as the selection criteria for the award. Current recruit Daphne Tan recently visited Amy’s Mum in . Amy’s Mum was keen to pass on her thanks to our community, stating that she ‘knows that was Amy’s happiest time, when she joined original bootcamp’.
FRIDAY EVENING SHRED SESSIONS – starting back next month at Wattle Park (6pm start)
Supplement your Original Bootcamp training with an additional ‘shred’ session, designed with a focus on agility, flexibility, strength and muscular endurance. This session typically involves no running but, rather, includes the use of alternate equipment/activities such as boxing, TRX training and agility ladders. Music is also a highlight for additional motivation. Limited numbers (due to equipment and space) so get in quick.
A great way to finish the working week!
SATURDAY SESSION LOCATIONS will be as follows for the remainder of the year:
Week 1 and 2 – Como Park North (usual spot)
Week 3 – Morell Bridge (Bottom of Anderson Street Hill), South Yarra
Week 4 – Kerferd Road Beach
Each month one of our instructors or recruits will share their thoughts/ insights by responding to a series of questions. This month Damian ‘Damo’ Nenna is in the spotlight:
Favourite exercise
Kettlebell/sandbag swings – it’s a full body strength exercise that is also a great conditioning tool. Bang for buck!
Least favourite exercise
Bulgarian split squats. Great exercise but incredibly tough
Put a Billboard anywhere in the world, where would you put it and what would it say
Time Square NYC – ‘You’re doing great. Be kinder to yourself’
Workout Karaoke song
Don’t be afraid to be different (Logic)
Cheat Meal –Prawn and calamari pizza from our local
Last book read
‘The Art of Resilience’ – Ross Edgley (Highly recommend)
Hero/Inspiration
My two daughters Marlee (5) and Scout (2) are my inspiration and motivation. How they approach life has taught me a lot.
Motto
Control what is in your control and don’t worry about the rest. If you worry about things before they happen you end up worrying about them twice.
The Living Edge OBC is
a supportive community that takes a holistic approach to fitness.
Advice for your 20 year old self
I’d tell my 20 year old self that he is in for a wild ride. To learn more from mistakes, take more risks and put myself first more
You will recall from the article in our August newsletter that the fitness components can be broken into 2 major divisions:
HEALTH RELATED – these are the components recommended for general health and wellbeing
and
SKILL RELATED – more typically seen in trained athletes
A number of these components are tested in our monthly benchmark tests.
This month, recruits completed the Cooper’s 12 minute run, which is a test of aerobic fitness that provides an accurate estimate of VO2 max.
You can use the following table of norms to assess your performance:
If these are too small to read clearly, try using this online calculator. This will also allow you to determine your predicted VO2 max and to understand what this means.
The other fitness tests undertaken this month target muscular endurance. HERE are the tables to assess your performance in the 1 minute sit-up test.

Variations for Battle Rope Training
Battle rope training is an excellent conditioning training method for those looking for an alternative to running. This YouTube video demonstrates a variety of fantastic battlerope activities.
