What a fantastic start to the last quarter of 2023!
October was a cracking month of training, with sessions put together by coaches and support staff across all locations. A huge shoutout to you all, for putting together a testing program focusing on some different fitness areas: Joey, Leithy, Scotty, Anth, Belinda, Nath and Kwokie – your continued effort is appreciated!
Some quick reminders:
Have a ripper month of training and don’t forget to give Jason’s playlist a listen here!
This months Spirit of Bootcamp Nominations, recognised individuals for a range of reasons. Just remember, you do not need to wait until the end of the month to send your nominations through and taking a few minutes to shoot an SMS through, can maybe change someone’s day, week month. See some of the nominations sent through below:
- “Thomas Shevlin who always works with a quiet, determined demeanor and once he is warmed up he just glides through his gears stepping up to elite level in all activities in every session he attends…”
- “Brian N, Sharan J, Daph the only three I believe who trained ALL sessions this month. Leading by Example and keeping the standards high.”
- “Graham has been on almost very session while Sarge Murray is away. He deserves to be recognised…”
- “Boris who to me is Mr Consistency because he always stives so hard to reach his limits in every fitness engagement we he have..”
- “Rezza who fastidiously achieves his highest potential in all fitness sessions particularly with his running and exercise techniques”
- “Neetzy came back Monday night and brought a keen effervescence to training with her positive attitude and positive vibe. She struggled but gave her very best with a smile and great comradery!”

Most inspirational living person:
Courtney Dauwalter. She is redefining what’s possible in the field of ultra-running. This year, in a 2 month period, she won the 3 toughest 100 mile races in the world – Western States, Hardrock100 and UTMB, setting new records in the first 2. She already held the record at UTMB. But it’s her attitude that’s inspiring – grateful, humble and a nice person who just gets on with it.
What advice would you give your 18 year old self?
Perfectionism isn’t a strength – it’s a weakness that stops you from making progress. Make mistakes, try and fail, and try again. Good enough over and over is how you achieve your goals.
Best piece of advice you ever received?
Consistency is King.
This year 2nd half of 2023 I am most looking forward to:
Our annual Christmas break on the boat. Hopefully lots of great weather for running and paddleboarding. I’ve also got a couple more trail races, and an adventure race left to round out the year. It’s been a fabulous year on the trails.
Five people you’d invite to a dinner party?
Sandy, obviously 😊, and Frida Kahlo, John Bonham, Keith Richards and Michelle Obama
If you could live anywhere besides here, where would it be?
Somewhere on the Surf Coast, near the sea and good trails
If you had a superpower what would it be?
Flying would be pretty cool.
One thing people don’t know about you – what’s your hidden talent?
I can change the wheels and brake pads on a Ducati 996RS race bike in under 5 minutes. 😊
Death Row last meal?
Some kind of banquet with as many courses as possible!
First car:
A Volkswagen Beetle. It was bright blue, and the previous owner had lined the entire interior, including the glove box, with white fur.
Current car:
Nissan 350z Roadster
Dream car:
Nissan 370Z Nismo edition, or the new Z.
Rainy Day TV
I’m generally in the studio on rainy days, but will have something on in the background. I don’t mind rewatching the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy or all the Harry Potter movies.
The book/movie everyone should read/see:?
I’d love to suggest a great book, but I read so many of them and haven’t yet got a good system for remembering which ones are worth revisiting. Atomic Habits by James Clear is a good one for pragmatic advice.
First music concert:
Hush in 1979! (You youngsters will need to google them or see picture) (Stu – Is that a young Dave Anderson?)
Best song to get you pumped?
Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n Roses
What does the Living Edge OBC mean to you?
Living Edge OBC has been literally life-changing for me. When I came to my first ever session, and learned I’d have to run 1km (benchmark was different way back then), I was almost in tears. I’d never run more than about 200m before that and would have told you I hated running. The thought that one day I’d pin on race numbers on a regular basis and run long distances would have made me laugh.
It took me 10 minutes to do that first kilometre, but I did it, and I can still remember the feeling of accomplishment. Being part of the OBC family has completely redefined who I am in relation to wellbeing and fitness. I’ve done things I would never have though possible, because I’m fit enough to do them. Running on trails has become one of the great joys of my life, and I will be forever grateful for OBC, and in particular Sarge Dave’s influence, for helping me find that ‘why’.

Being healthy doesn’t have to be boring and you don’t need fancy ingredients – simply open the fridge, jump on Google and type in what you have! Try something different – you might be surprised. Below is a go-to recipe for me when there is a head of Broccoli which looks to be on the edge – I chuck in any dried fruit or nuts in the cupboard and BONZA!
