THE LIVING EDGE NEWS: JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024

ELEVATE YOUR WELLNESS IN 2024: IGNITE FITNESS, EMBRACE HEALTH

Welcome to a new year!

In general we have to celebrate the massive January had by all recruits – our community never ceases to amaze us! We had some huge numbers participate in the program and it was fantastic to see plenty of you involving the next generation. Sharing your fitness journey with those close to you, makes things all the more meaningful as you experience the highs and lows. TLE always welcome the ‘cadets’. #Unity!

We also had plenty of recruits participate in a range of events over the holiday period – great to see you set your mind to something and achieve your goals. No matter the set-backs you got it done and on behalf of the wider TLE Community we congratulate you! (Celebrating Wins, no matter how big or small is something we can all do better)

January also saw Sarge change things up a bit, setting a challenge with your mentor – sharing a word (or a few) to help drive you – Jess Santamaria’s “You got this” has always been a favourite and the crew look forward to hearing those catch cries out on the training field – feel free to get behind your mentor with it, it may just give them that extra push when they need it most. Dima – I am looking forward to you yelling out ‘Embrace It Stu!’

Lastly to Dave and Katrina – 17 years of changing peoples lives! Your ‘job’ of creating a space that welcomes any and all, whilst enabling people to grow in all aspects is an incredible thing to say you do for a living. This year, will be the best yet!

2024 – Embrace It!
Stu

Shifting Gears in 2024!

As we moved into 2024, speaking with many recruits about the recent publications in the newspaper around the state of our nation’s health, there was a consistent reaction and response, with this year being one many are focusing on themselves by:

  • finding balance between work and personal life
  • being consistent with their training
  • surrounding themselves with like-minded people and mentors
  • having 360 degree health (social, mental and physical health)

‘Fit for Life’ has never been more important and this year we are looking forward to elevating with you – focusing on the pillars of the program, whilst ensuring we ignite you, lighting a spark to challenge yourself and embrace all the community and program has to offer.

Over the break, we read your feedback (THANK YOU!) and decided to think outside the box to find new ways to take our ‘Fit for Life’ ethos to the next level. We know there is an opportunity to empower our community every day:

  • through sharing nuggets of gold, relating to health and wellness in newsletters, socials and our training sessions
  • shifting gears in our training programs (you may have already noticed this in January)
  • continuing to innovate and create ways to enable more people to get/keep fit and healthy in all aspects

It is truely an exciting time in our evolution and we look forward to what 2024 brings!

Hooyah!
Dave and Katrina
YOU'RE INVITED TO TRIAL 'FITNESS FUSION' IN THE LEAD UP TO OUR LAUNCH IN MARCH!
We will be sharing more information about the new program with you all shortly (keep an eye on our inbox!), however as we ramp up to the official launch in March, we invite you and friend to join us for two weeks to trial the new program. The trial weeks begin on Tuesday 20th February.

What are the pillars of ‘Fitness Fusion’?

  1. Mobility: Incorporating elements of Yoga, Pilates and Balance
  2. Strength: Using light dumbells, resistance bands, TRX and body weight
  3. Cardio: Low impact, using stairs, power walking and on-the-spot exercises

Who does ‘Fitness Fusion’ suit?

We all know that training in a group with like-minded people makes things just that little bit easier – however Bootcamp isn’t for everyone: be it physically or aligning with their health and wellness goals. ‘Fitness Fusion’ is a stand alone program perfect for those:

  • looking to get back into things – we all have to start somewhere!
  • who have had recent life changes – including new Mums.
  • wanting a low impact program, which focuses on mobility and cardio health

It is also a great inclusion to Bootcamp training for those looking for extra sessions/week without risking overtraining injuries.

Please let Dave or Katrina know if you or a friend will be attending the trial sessions, to ensure sessions are planned appropriately
PEAKE MEDAL - OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2023
The ‘Peake Medal’ commemorates David Peake while celebrating recruits who embody his legacy – his values and behaviours:

  • Commitment and Consistency
  • Training with Intent
  • Having Fun!

Congratulations to the well deserved recipients of the award who contribute to the program on and off the field, not just in the last quarter of 2023, but have done so since joining  ‘The Living Edge’ program:

  • Daphne Tan
  • Scott Ellis
  • Nareeta Singh
TIPS AND TRICKS - KEEPING HYDRATED AND SELF CARE
A recent feature in the Sunday Herald Sun identified that 60% of Australians are considered to be overweight or unhealthy– a rather shocking statistic!
Whilst being overweight has many contributors , the good news is that many of these are within our control: with focused effort and putting in some foundational behaviours which are easily made into habit, we can help turn the tide!
Each month, we will feature some tips and tricks for setting up these habits – it’s not rocket science but as the saying goes, out of sight out of mind!

KEEPING HYDRATED – DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER

Drinking plenty of water is something all of us can do better and the benefits are almost endless! Water has multiple functions within our body and whilst grabbing a cold soft-drink might give you some short-term satisfaction, it doesn’t provide the same level of benefits the old H2O gives us. We are incredibly lucky to live in a country where water is easily accessible, free and clean!

See the info-graphic for more information on all the benefits and consider some of the below to introduce more water into your day:

  1. As soon as you wake up drink a glass of water (Even adding some Apple Cider Vinegar) – not only will it kick-start your day, but also your body!
  2. If working from home, use a glass and aim to drink one glass each hour – getting up to fill it, will get you up from your desk and you’ll stay alert.
  3. Whenever you feel hungry – have a glass of water – Our brains commonly confuse hunger for thirst.

SELF CARE – LET’S BE PROACTIVE NOT REACTIVE

It’s easier said than done, our internal voice plays trick on us and is influenced by so many things. There is no formula to getting this right, however there are some small things we can do which can ‘train’ ourselves to have more of a growth mindset. We encourage all of you to share some of your learnings with your mentors and the wider ‘WhatsApp’ group as we can all learn more in relation to this.

Our community is the source of so much knowledge – let’s be proactive, collectively – not only does it make it easier to smash out a trail run, but also to smash your personal health goals!

  • ‘Let go of what you can’t control’
  • ‘Celebrate the micro-wins’
  • ‘You’re a sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with – surround yourself with positive people’
  • ‘Rather than ask ‘Why cant I’ ask yourself ‘How might I’ – framing a challenge differently sometimes enables you to find solutions you never thought possible!

My involvement with Original Bootcamp and The Living Edge has been life changing. In 2012, I was seeking an outdoor fitness program that would challenge me and improve my fitness, but what I got from it is so much more. It's the best thing I've ever been part of! I've made lifelong friendships, it is a wonderful, supportive network, and I'd recommend it to anyone, no matter what their health and fitness goals are.

Training with The Living Edge has become an integral part of my life over the last few years. The instructors are inspirational, highly skilled and deliver a brilliant program that’s diverse, challenging, motivational and for me and, above all, so much fun! I absolutely love starting my day in the beautiful natural setting of Wattle Park. For me, it’s far more than just physical exercise, it’s had a huge positive effect on my mental and emotional well-being. I’ve made so many friends; it's a true community that encourages, supports and cares for one another. Rain, hail or shine I look forward to each session. It will always be part of my life.
Ingrid Kuebler Personal training
Joining Original Bootcamp with the Living Edge has been the best decision I have ever made. I will admit I went into it somewhat reluctantly, expecting to be pushed well beyond my limits and told to suck it up. What I found however was the most encouraging and inclusive community of people, whose only intent is to see people succeed in whatever they set their mind to. The support, the uplift in spirit and the focus on mindset and improvement at MY pace, has not only increased my physical fitness beyond all of my expectations, it has also filtered into my family and work life, creating a balance that has made me a better father, husband and worker as well as happier more fulfilled individual. Only you can change your health and happiness. The Living Edge will give you the tools and support to put your plan into action.

Nowadays it is not easy to find a place where the sense of community is at the forefront. The Original Bootcamp, lead by Sarge Dave Murray from The Living Edge, ticks this important box. From the first day, one can feel the camaraderie, support and encouragement that uplift the spirit during the hardest part of training or the coldest day of winter. Knowing that I will share an hour with a group of people with the same mindset motivates me every morning. That is just half of the equation because Dave Murray and his team of trainers lead by example, and they are always attentive to how we perform the exercise and that we are doing it the right way.

It’s never too late! I started attending Original Bootcamp training with The Living Edge in early 2014, after a 9-year break from regular exercise. I was in my 50’s and unfit by every measure. From the first session I was welcomed and never judged. Every recruit had been through a similar journey and they only offered words of encouragement and advice. Within 6 months I was back to being fit and feeling good about myself. Dave and the other trainers at The Living Edge have created an amazing culture, inclusive of people from all walks of life and occupations. Everyone is equal no matter who you are, and the camaraderie is both infectious and humbling. 8 years of Original Bootcamp with The Living Edge has been life changing for me, it’s that simple!

I have been a long- term Bootcamp recruit with The Living Edge for over 12 years and couldn’t imagine my life without it. No two training sessions are the same, so you know your body and mind will always be challenged and never become bored. I love exercising in the early morning fresh air with a connected, like-minded community who encourage and support each other throughout the session. My Original Bootcamp training with The Living Edge sets me up for a positive day!
Jan PalamaraOriginal Bootcamp Recruit
I started training with The Living Edge in 2014. A short break to have my daughter and then I was back to Bootcamp. This is a great outdoor program with a variety of cardio and weight training. The sessions are always varied and well researched which keeps things interesting as well as beneficial fitness wise. The trainers are superb and Sarge Dave Murray is very motivational and supportive of your goals and aspirations. He has created a culture that is more like a community where everyone helps each other out. One of his favourite sayings is ‘together, everyone achieves more’. The support, camaraderie and banter is what keeps me coming back again and again. The Living Edge is so much more than just fitness training for me. It is the medicine for my mental health. Cannot recommend it highly enough!
