THE LIVING EDGE NEWS: APRIL 2024

REMEMBER YOUR WHY!

As we are well into the colder months, waking up early OR getting to training after work can be just that little more challenging! It’s OK to admit it’s tough but remember those ‘SMART’ Goals we talked about in the February Newsletter? – remind, re-align and reset – Remember, every step counts. Celebrate small victories, stay curious, and keep moving forward – as Jess Santamaria always says ‘YOU’VE GOT THIS!’💪🏋️‍♀️🌟

Catching up with Coach D over the past couple of weeks, some key messages during sessions and chats have resonated – when you sit back and think through them a little more and delve into the ‘WHY’, you might just have that ‘Aha!’ moment:

  1. Mentoring: As part of your program, communicate with your TLE mentor, but also seek out mentors who inspire you. Whether it’s a seasoned athlete, a supportive friend, or a dedicated trainer, their guidance can propel you forward. Remember, even the strongest started as beginners, and mentoring bridges that gap. (Don’t forget that +1)
  2. Recovery: Cherish recovery as much as your workouts. It’s during rest that your body rebuilds and grows stronger. Listen to your body—stretch, hydrate, and get quality sleep. Recovery isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of wisdom.
  3. Nutrition: Fuel your body with intention. Think of food as nourishment, not just calories. Opt for whole foods, colorful veggies, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Remember, your plate is your palette for vitality.
  4. Schedule of Training: Consistency is your secret weapon. Commit to your TLE training schedule and if unable to make a session work with your coach to attend an alternative session. Outside of TLE, create a schedule that aligns with your life – whether it’s early mornings, lunch breaks, or evenings, commit to getting a walk a stretch in. Consistency breeds results.
  5. Seeing Experts for Advice: Seek professional advice when needed. Whether it’s a nutritionist, physiotherapist, or Coach D + K – their expertise fine-tunes your journey. Don’t hesitate—experts are your allies in progress.

JOIN THE PUSH-UP CHALLENGE !

Each year, OBC team captain Pedro Chauca  has put an amazing effort bringing awareness to the Push-Up Challenge, an inspiring event that takes place in Australia during June.

This year we would love to see more participants, join the challenge to raise funds for the ‘Push for Better Foundation’.  To learn more about the challenge, read below and if you would like to donate or join jump to the link below!

Let’s go! I want to support the OBC Push Up Challenge

What Is the Push-Up Challenge?

    • The Push-Up Challenge is a free mental health and fitness event aimed at promoting better mental health for all Australians. It runs from 5th to 28th June.
    • Participants commit to completing 3,249 push-ups (or alternative exercises) over 24 days. This number represents the 3,249 lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2022.
    • You don’t have to be a push-up pro to participate! Feel free to substitute push-ups with sit-ups, squats, or other tailored exercises. You can even aim for half the target if you prefer.
    • Whether you go solo or join a team, the more, the merrier! Gather your mates, coworkers, schoolmates, or sports club members to participate together.

How It Works:

    • Daily Targets and Mental Health Facts: Participants receive daily push-up targets related to important mental health facts. You can track your progress and learn about mental health along the way using the app.
    • Fundraising: While fundraising is optional, it’s a great way to make a difference. Choose to support beneficiaries like Lifeline, headspace, or The Push for Better Foundation.
    • Registration: It’s easy and free to register. Simply sign up here and fill out a few details.
    • Level Up Your Health: Research shows that exercise improves mood and physical health.

Get Involved:

    • Spread the Word: Share your fundraising page and invite friends to register. Let’s create a supportive community in the push for better mental health!
    • Download the App: Use the app to check daily targets, track your push-ups, and read mental health facts. It’s your daily dose of exercise and a conversation starter.
    • Make a Difference: By participating, you’re not only improving your own health but also contributing to mental health services across Australia. Join the movement and make an impact! 🌟

THE AMY SU SHIELD (Annual Award)

Congratulations to Graeme Clark on being announced as the recipient of the “Amy Su” shield for 2024!

Graeme began his journey with TLE OBC in 2007, a remarkable 17 years ago. He not only meets all the criteria but goes above and beyond. His integrity, loyalty, and commitment to the culture and values of TLE/OBC are commendable. Graeme’s emphasis on family and his role as a positive model for his daughters is truly inspiring. If I had a superpower it would be

To fly so I don’t have to take public transport!

My guilty pleasure is

Peppermint Choc Chip Ice Cream.

Something you may not know about me is

I have acted in over 50 Television Commercials.

The song which makes me smile or feel good is

Love on Top by Beyonce – it’s Beyonce!

If I was to recommend a Book or TV show to someone it would be….

Just finished reading Matthew Perry bio ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing’. An interesting look into someone’s life who was so talented and will be missed.

In my free-time you will find me

Acting or at the beach.

Over the next few months I am aiming to

Improve my running and have more balance in life.

Where do you find your inspiration?

To improve, discover strength and weaknesses or even new perspectives from peers, friends and family.

If I was to give a piece of advice to the future generation it would be

What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.

What do you love about the Living Edge program and what does it mean to you? (OBC or Fitness Fusion)

How supportive and encouraging everyone is. As well as having a coffee together always makes my day!

My involvement with Original Bootcamp and The Living Edge has been life changing. In 2012, I was seeking an outdoor fitness program that would challenge me and improve my fitness, but what I got from it is so much more. It's the best thing I've ever been part of! I've made lifelong friendships, it is a wonderful, supportive network, and I'd recommend it to anyone, no matter what their health and fitness goals are.

Training with The Living Edge has become an integral part of my life over the last few years. The instructors are inspirational, highly skilled and deliver a brilliant program that’s diverse, challenging, motivational and for me and, above all, so much fun! I absolutely love starting my day in the beautiful natural setting of Wattle Park. For me, it’s far more than just physical exercise, it’s had a huge positive effect on my mental and emotional well-being. I’ve made so many friends; it's a true community that encourages, supports and cares for one another. Rain, hail or shine I look forward to each session. It will always be part of my life.

Joining Original Bootcamp with the Living Edge has been the best decision I have ever made. I will admit I went into it somewhat reluctantly, expecting to be pushed well beyond my limits and told to suck it up. What I found however was the most encouraging and inclusive community of people, whose only intent is to see people succeed in whatever they set their mind to. The support, the uplift in spirit and the focus on mindset and improvement at MY pace, has not only increased my physical fitness beyond all of my expectations, it has also filtered into my family and work life, creating a balance that has made me a better father, husband and worker as well as happier more fulfilled individual. Only you can change your health and happiness. The Living Edge will give you the tools and support to put your plan into action.

Nowadays it is not easy to find a place where the sense of community is at the forefront. The Original Bootcamp, lead by Sarge Dave Murray from The Living Edge, ticks this important box. From the first day, one can feel the camaraderie, support and encouragement that uplift the spirit during the hardest part of training or the coldest day of winter. Knowing that I will share an hour with a group of people with the same mindset motivates me every morning. That is just half of the equation because Dave Murray and his team of trainers lead by example, and they are always attentive to how we perform the exercise and that we are doing it the right way.

It’s never too late! I started attending Original Bootcamp training with The Living Edge in early 2014, after a 9-year break from regular exercise. I was in my 50’s and unfit by every measure. From the first session I was welcomed and never judged. Every recruit had been through a similar journey and they only offered words of encouragement and advice. Within 6 months I was back to being fit and feeling good about myself. Dave and the other trainers at The Living Edge have created an amazing culture, inclusive of people from all walks of life and occupations. Everyone is equal no matter who you are, and the camaraderie is both infectious and humbling. 8 years of Original Bootcamp with The Living Edge has been life changing for me, it’s that simple!
Paul BirchOriginal Bootcamp recruit
I have been a long- term Bootcamp recruit with The Living Edge for over 12 years and couldn’t imagine my life without it. No two training sessions are the same, so you know your body and mind will always be challenged and never become bored. I love exercising in the early morning fresh air with a connected, like-minded community who encourage and support each other throughout the session. My Original Bootcamp training with The Living Edge sets me up for a positive day!
Jan PalamaraOriginal Bootcamp Recruit
I started training with The Living Edge in 2014. A short break to have my daughter and then I was back to Bootcamp. This is a great outdoor program with a variety of cardio and weight training. The sessions are always varied and well researched which keeps things interesting as well as beneficial fitness wise. The trainers are superb and Sarge Dave Murray is very motivational and supportive of your goals and aspirations. He has created a culture that is more like a community where everyone helps each other out. One of his favourite sayings is ‘together, everyone achieves more’. The support, camaraderie and banter is what keeps me coming back again and again. The Living Edge is so much more than just fitness training for me. It is the medicine for my mental health. Cannot recommend it highly enough!
